Framlingham

The historic town of Framlingham in Suffolk is well known for having excellent independent shops, and for being one of the most desirable places to live in the country, yet it’s most famous for the majestic building that crowns it: Framlingham Castle.

Framlingham Castle was built in the 1100s, and for centuries remained a seat of power at the centre of a vast and influential network that reached as far as the English throne. It was home to the Earls and Dukes of Norfolk: rich, ambitious families such as the Howards and the Mowbrays. However, in 1552, Framlingham passed to Henry VIII’s daughter, Mary Tudor. After the death of her brother the king, Mary fled to Framlingham Castle, and there gathered her troops before marching on London to claim the throne.

Woodbridge

Woodbridge in Suffolk is a beautiful riverside town full of things to see and do. Here you can enjoy the atmosphere of a busy market town that has deep connections to the water, and discover some of the most important historical sites in the country.

With a history of boatbuilding, sail and rope making that dates back to the Middle Ages, Woodbridge has for centuries been shaped by its position on the River Deben. Boating, canoeing, and walks along the river into the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB are all great ways to experience a slice of riverside life in Woodbridge. As is visiting Woodbridge Tide Mill, a historic 800-year-old water mill still where you can discover what life was like for a miller and his family, and on certain days watch flour being milled in traditional fashion by a waterwheel and millstones.
